Advocacy

Take Action to Stop Racial Profiling in Michigan!

You have an important opportunity to voice your opposition to anti-immigrant legislation H. B. 6256 recently proposed by Michigan State Representative Kim Meltzer (R-Clinton Twp.).

Write or call your State Representative and let him/her know your opposition.
Go to congress.org/congressorg/dbq/officials/ - and find your State representative.

House Bill 6256 mimics Arizona’s law requiring local police to demand immigration papers from any person they perceive as undocumented. The law’s use of “reasonable suspicion” as the only criteria for these stops practically compels racial profiling. It will also force police to divert scarce resources away from promoting public safety and solving serious crimes.

See United Methodist General Board of Church & Society, Faith In Action April 28, 2010 for information on opposition to Arizona’s passed legislation and position of United Methodist for a comprehensive comprehensive immigration reform – Go to www.umc-gbcs.org/ -
