Official International Day Of Peace
Monday, September 21, 2009
In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution (A/RES/55/282) designating September 21st of each year as an International Day of Peace.
The Detroit Annual Conference adopted Resolution #2 encouraging local churches to observe the International Day of Peace on September 21, 2006 in an appropriate manner. It is hoped that local churches will continue to observe each International Day of Peace every September 21. Listed below are a few suggestion on how to observe the day:
- 24-hour prayer vigil observation.
- Youth celebration with song and dance
- Candelight vigil
- Ring bells at Noon to coincide with other churches around the world
- Write local governments to proclaim the day as International Day of Peace
- Join with other churches to plan a program
- Have an Interfaith worship service
- Distribute 3 x 5 cards to congregation and have members write thoughts about peace. Send cards to President Barack Obama
- Please register your commitment on the International Day of Peace Vigil website or mail it to: International Day of Peace Vigil, 777 UN Plaza, Concourse Level, New York, NY 10017

300,000 people participated in the International Day of Peace Vigil in Sri Lanka in 2004
