The Higher Education and Campus Ministry works to help our Hope members (or sons and daughters of Hope members) who are currently enrolled in one of our country’s fine colleges or universities stay connected with their Hope family. One of the ways we do this is by sending Care Packages to our students in the Spring and Fall. Past packages have included such items as sermon tapes of our senior pastor; devotional booklets; supplies (i.e., pens, diskettes, highlighters); snacks (i.e. noodles, soup, microwave popcorn, cookies, hot chocolate); and other items (i.e., scholarship information, phone cards, etc.).
If you are a Hope member or have a son/daughter currently enrolled in college, please complete the Registration Form and place it in the Higher Education & Campus Ministry mailbox located near the sanctuary. The deadline for registration for a Care Package is October 15, 2006.
If you own a business or would simply like to donate an item to be received by our students, please contact Will Harris, Chairperson of Higher Education and Campus Ministry. We welcome and appreciate donations.
This committee makes prospective college students of the congregation aware of scholarship and loan opportunities through the Board of Higher Education in Nashville, the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church, and the Detroit Black United Methodist Youth Scholarship Fund.
Members of the church are also made aware of United Methodist related institutions of higher learning, black United Methodist Colleges and other entities, which provide quality education for youth and adults.
Efforts are also made to establish linkages with the Wesley Foundations at Wayne State University and University of Michigan and other universities to find ways of providing support for theses institutions and the Hope students who attend them.
Additional programs include a career or vocational emphasis days and other observances to inform students of resources and opportunities for higher education.
Components
Students are identified at the beginning of both the fall and spring terms.
Care packages, mid-term notes of encouragement, taped sermons, notes from children
of the church, etc. are mailed to students each term. Correspondence with students
includes keeping them informed of Hope United Methodist Church activities and
financial assistance opportunities.
Our Contribution To Church Growth
By maintaining contact with students while they are away from the local church,
they still feel connected to the church and are less likely to desert the
church once they are in college. Students are not only more likely to maintain
their
Hope United Methodist Church membership, but also will introduce college
friends to Hope.
