The Higher Education & Campus Ministry (HECM) helps students know that the church supports them as they increase in knowledge and shape those visions. This ministry keeps in touch with students of our congregation at both the undergraduate and graduate level in a number of ways. We make them aware of scholarship and loan opportunities through the Board of Higher Education in Nashville, the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church, and the Detroit Black United Methodist Youth Scholarship Fund.

About Us

As stated in the United Methodist Church Guidelines, “College is a time when students shape the dreams and visions that will influence the rest of their lives. Those years also are a time when students examine the faith and values that will support their life choices.” The Higher Education & Campus Ministry (HECM) helps students know that the church supports them as they increase in knowledge and shape those visions.

Efforts are being made to establish linkages with the Wesley Foundations at Wayne State University and University of Michigan and other universities to find ways of providing support for these institutions and the Hope students who attend them. We also work to help high school juniors and seniors prepare for college. “The church is involved in higher education—education for the common good, challenging faithful people to develop faithful minds for faithful life in the world.”

Ministry of Higher EducationOur Mission

The mission of the Higher Education & Campus Ministry is to encourage our members who are in pursuit of higher learning to stay spiritually connected with God. We strive to make certain that students know that they are in our thoughts and prayers, especially while away from home.

We do this by sending them care packages in the Fall and Spring, electronic birthday greetings, information about scholarship opportunities and the like throughout the year. We are also responsible for coordinating the annual Hope Church Scholarship and Graduation Recognition Program.

Our Contribution to Church Growth

By maintaining contact with students while they are away from Hope church, they tell us that they feel spiritually connected and are more inclined to participate in ministries while away. In addition, they are more likely to maintain their Hope United Methodist Church membership, actively participate in ministries of the Hope Church while home on a break, and introduce/invite their friends to Hope.

College Connection

Photos Available Photos Available! Click here to see images from College Connection.

College Connection unites Hope high school students with Hope college students to learn about their college experience. Getting into the school of their choice, academic requirements, life on campus, necessary adjustments, staying spiritually connected, etc., are but a few of the topics discussed. Meeting for the first time in December of 2008 during R.O.C.K., we had a turn-out of nearly 100 students!

Ministry of Higher EducationCollege students were offered letters documenting 2 hours of community service for their involvement. The program included games, prizes, and refreshments. Needless to say, we expect to make this an annual event.

Care Packages

The Higher Education and Campus Ministry works to help our Hope members who are currently enrolled in one of our country’s fine colleges or universities stay connected with their Hope family. Care Packages are sent in the Spring and Fall. Past packages have included such items as snacks, bookmarks, highlighters, post-it notes, and a letter and sermon tape from our Senior Pastor, Dr. Carlyle Fielding Stewart, III. If you own a business or would simply like to donate an item to be received by our students, please eMail Janice Anene at j.anene@sbcglobal.net. Please make sure to put “HECM Donation” on the subject line of your email. We welcome and appreciate donations.

Care packages are sent in the Spring and Fall.

Scholarships

This ministry coordinates the annual Hope Scholarship.

We also make prospective college students of the congregation aware of scholarship and loan opportunities through the Board of Higher Education in Nashville, the Detroit Conference of the United Methodist Church, and the Detroit Black United Methodist Youth Scholarship Fund.

HECM alerts members of the church of United Methodist related institutions of higher learning, Black United Methodist Colleges and other entities, which provide quality education for youth and adults.

Graduation Recognition Program

Photos Available Photos Available! Click here to see images from the 2008 ceremony.

Graduation Recognition Sunday is when Hope acknowledges and celebrates all of its graduates beginning with those at the high school level. Students stand before the congregation as we announce their name, degree and school. In the case of high school students, we announce their intentions for the fall. The church also gives each student a gift to commemorate their accomplishment.

Be sure that Higher Education & Campus Ministry is aware that you are graduating. This year's ceremony is on Sunday, June 13, 2010.
