Maynard Q. Stansbury Wins the Gold Medal
Oakland County Michigan Senior Olympics |
1-25-2010
On January 25, 2010 there was a competition amongst seniors in bench pressing held at the Powerhouse Gym in Rochester Hills, MI. This competition is for anyone over the age of 50. Competitors are grouped according to their age, and each has three lifts to demonstrate their ability. This event included men and women ranging from ages 50 – 82.
Hope’s own Maynard Q. Stansbury competed in the seniors men’s category with men between the ages of 65 –69. By the headline above, you know the rest of the story. Yes, he won the Gold Medal in his division by bench pressing 235 pounds with some left in the tank to go higher if it had been needed. Just for the records Maynard Stansbury is 68 years of age. In his early years he has lifted over 350 pounds.
There were more than 20 supporters out to cheer Maynard on and we wore black t-shirts inscribed with the initials MQS (MAYNARD QUINN STANSBURY) going for the gold. We had a wonderful time watching him compete and seeing others do their thing as well. Most of the supporters were Hope members. Maynard stated to us that he certainly did appreciate our support. There was an 82 year old female who lifted 75 lbs. and we certainly were impressed. Think you could lift 75 pounds? Try and see, then you can get a real appreciation of her feat.
Discussions are being held with having a power lifting competition in our own gym at Hope. Stay on the lookout for the time. When you see Maynard around, congratulate him. Maynard is the proud husband of Carolyn Parnell Stansbury. WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF YOU, MAYNARD Q. STANSBURY.
